Newberry EGS Demonstration Status Update: Looking Back on 2010, Forward to 2011

January 19, 2011

AltaRock Energy and Davenport Newberry shared an exciting year at the Newberry Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) Demonstration site near La Pine, Oregon. The Department of Energy (DOE)-sponsored project, aimed at developing EGS technology to the benefit of the public at large, has been underway since November 2009.

As 2010 came to a close, the AltaRock-Davenport Newberry partnership announced a series of positive year-end developments. Recent progress has included:

  • Completing budget negotiations with the DOE. Of the $43.8 million required for the project, $21.4 million will be funded through a grant from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, and $22.4 million will be funded by AltaRock Energy and Davenport Newberry directly.
  • Completing permitting and installation of temporary seismic monitoring stations.
  • Completing a series of successful public information sessions and regulatory briefings. At the most recent forum held in late September in Bend, Oregon, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced its plans to move the demonstration forward by initiating its Environmental Assessment of the project.
  • Developing and commencing a permitting plan in cooperation with the BLM, the U.S. Forest Service, the DOE, and state and municipal authorities.
  • AltaRock’s successful testing the diverter process, integral to planned stimulation techniques, at representative temperatures at an operating geothermal field.
  • Publishing the results of an Induced Seismicity and Seismic Hazards Risk Analysis, conducted by an independent consultant.

Moving Forward

With 2011 well underway, both AltaRock and Davenport Newberry look forward to an exciting year at the Newberry EGS Demonstration. Key developments will include the BLM’s Environmental Assessment and our own continued progress in accordance with the demonstration plan.

We will provide regular status updates on the demonstration’s progress as each key step is completed. To stay abreast of these developments, subscribe to the Newberry EGS Demonstration RSS feed or follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
